Bharathidasan University, located at Palkalaiperur in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, is a state public university established in 1982. It was named after the revolutionary Tamil poet Bharathidasan (1891–1964), and its motto “We will create a brave new world” reflects his vision of social change through education. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited with an A+ grade by NAAC in its third cycle, securing the 36th rank among Indian universities in NIRF 2025.
The main campus at Palkalaiperur was originally spread over 1,000 acres, though portions have since been allocated to other institutions such as Anna University of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli. Today, Bharathidasan University operates with 4 faculties, 16 schools, 37 departments, and 29 specialized research centers, covering disciplines in Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, and Technology.
It has a strong network of affiliated colleges across districts including Ariyalur, Karur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Tiruchirappalli, making it a key hub for higher education in central Tamil Nadu. The university also runs a Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), extending opportunities to learners beyond its physical campus.
