About Captain Williamson Sangma State University

Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), located in Balalgre, P.O. Damalgre, West Garo Hills District, Tura, Meghalaya, is the first state university established by the Government of Meghalaya. Officially launched in August 2025, it marks a significant milestone in the state’s higher education landscape, offering students an alternative to North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and its affiliated institutions. The university was created to expand access to quality education, particularly for students from tribal and rural backgrounds, while also promoting research and cultural preservation. The Tura campus currently offers postgraduate programs in Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Science, Garo, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. Additionally, the Shillong regional campus provides courses in Commerce and other disciplines, ensuring wider reach across the state. CWSSU has also announced that it will bypass the CUET requirement, making admissions more accessible for local students under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework.
