The Central University of Odisha (CUO), located at Sunabeda in Koraput District, is a central university established in 2009 under the Central Universities Act, 2009. It is one of the 15 new central universities created by the Government of India to expand access to higher education in underserved regions, particularly the KBK area (Koraput, Bolangir, and Kalahandi) of Odisha.
CUO offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Education, Journalism & Mass Communication, Computer Science, and Agriculture. Admissions are conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for both UG and PG programs, ensuring a transparent and merit-based process. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by NAAC.
The Sunabeda campus is spread over 450 acres in a rural setting, providing a peaceful environment conducive to learning and research. It is equipped with classrooms, laboratories, libraries, hostels, and cultural facilities. CUO emphasizes interdisciplinary research and community engagement, with initiatives focusing on tribal studies, biodiversity, sustainable development, and regional development.
Guided by its motto “CUO for Nation Building”, the Central University of Odisha has emerged as a growing hub of higher education in the state, nurturing professionals, researchers, and leaders who contribute meaningfully to academia, industry, and society while addressing the unique cultural and developmental needs of the region.
