About
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU), established in 1994, is a state public open university located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), it was founded by the Government of Gujarat to provide inclusive and flexible higher education opportunities, especially for those who cannot pursue traditional, full-time programs. Named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the university embodies his vision of social justice, equality, and empowerment through education.
BAOU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, and vocational programs across disciplines such as arts, commerce, education, social sciences, computer applications, and management. As an open university, it follows a distance learning model, supported by study centers across Gujarat, enabling students from diverse backgrounds—including working professionals, women, and rural learners—to access higher education. BAOU was founded in 1994 to expand access to higher education through open and distance learning. It is a UGC-recognized public university with NAAC accreditation. The university offers programs such as BA, B.Com, B.Sc, B.Ed, BCA, MA, M.Com, MBA, MCA, M.Ed, and Ph.D., along with diploma and certificate courses in vocational and skill-based fields. Admissions are conducted on a merit basis, with eligibility requiring 10+2 for UG programs, graduation for PG programs, and postgraduation with 55% marks for Ph.D.. Fees are highly affordable, with UG programs costing around ₹3,000–₹5,000 annually and PG programs around ₹6,000–₹10,000 annually, making education accessible to all learners.
