The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), located on Raja S.C. Mullick Road, Jadavpur, Kolkata, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious research institutions. Established in 1876 by Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, it was founded with the vision of advancing scientific research and education in India. IACS is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and operates under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The institute is dedicated exclusively to fundamental and applied research in the sciences, with strong focus areas including physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and energy research. It is historically significant as the place where Sir C.V. Raman conducted his groundbreaking work on the scattering of light, leading to the discovery of the Raman Effect, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
