Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science , Kolkata : Admissions 2026, Courses, Fees & Placements

About

The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), located on Raja S.C. Mullick Road, Jadavpur, Kolkata, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious research institutions. Established in 1876 by Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, it was founded with the vision of advancing scientific research and education in India. IACS is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and operates under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The institute is dedicated exclusively to fundamental and applied research in the sciences, with strong focus areas including physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and energy research. It is historically significant as the place where Sir C.V. Raman conducted his groundbreaking work on the scattering of light, leading to the discovery of the Raman Effect, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. IACS offers doctoral and postdoctoral programs, along with advanced research opportunities, and collaborates with national and international institutions. The campus is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, research centers, libraries, and seminar facilities, fostering innovation and scientific excellence.

Admissions Open 2026: Courses, Eligibility & Fees

IACS admits students to integrated B.Sc.–M.Sc., M.Sc.–Ph.D., and Ph.D. programs in science disciplines. Admissions are conducted through national-level entrance exams such as IIT-JAM, JEST, and IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), followed by interviews. Eligibility for the integrated program requires 10+2 with strong marks in science subjects, while M.Sc.–Ph.D. programs require a bachelor’s degree in science, and Ph.D. programs require a master’s degree in a relevant field. The admission process includes online application, entrance exam scores, shortlisting, and interviews. Fees are highly subsidized compared to private universities, with integrated and postgraduate programs costing only a few thousand rupees annually, reflecting IACS’s focus on research rather than commercialization.

Campus Life and Facilities

Located in Jadavpur, Kolkata, the IACS campus is spread across a modern facility with specialized schools of physical sciences, chemical sciences, biological sciences, materials sciences, and mathematical & computational sciences. The campus houses state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced research centers, a central library, computer facilities, hostels, seminar halls, and medical services. Scholarships & Fee Concessions

Students benefit from government scholarships such as INSPIRE, CSIR-NET fellowships, and UGC-JRF/SRF schemes. IACS also provides institutional fellowships and stipends for integrated and doctoral students. Nearly all Ph.D. candidates receive financial support, and a significant percentage of M.Sc. and integrated program students benefit from fee waivers or merit-based concessions, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for talented students across India.

Top Placements & Partner Companies

Graduates of IACS primarily pursue research careers in academia, national laboratories, and international universities. Many secure postdoctoral positions abroad or join organizations such as CSIR, DRDO, BARC, IISc, IITs, and global research institutes. While corporate placements are limited due to the research-oriented nature of the institute, students find opportunities in pharmaceuticals, materials science, and advanced technology firms. The institute organizes career workshops, internships, and collaborative projects to enhance exposure. Average research fellowships range between ₹35,000–45,000 per month, while international postdoctoral opportunities can exceed ₹50–70 lakhs annually.
