About Indian Maritime University
Indian Maritime University (IMU), located on East Coast Road at Semmencherry in Chennai, is a central university established in 2008 by the Government of India through the Indian Maritime University Act. It was created to consolidate maritime education under a single umbrella and to strengthen India’s role in global shipping and logistics.
IMU serves as the nodal agency for maritime training in India, offering programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral levels across disciplines such as Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Maritime Law, Logistics, and Port & Shipping Management. Admissions are conducted through the IMU Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET), ensuring a standardized and merit-based process.
The Semmencherry campus in Chennai is the headquarters of IMU and is equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, simulators, libraries, hostels, and sports facilities. In addition to the Chennai campus, IMU has regional campuses in Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, and Kochi, making it a truly national institution.
