International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, established in 1956, is a premier deemed-to-be university located at Govandi Station Road, Deonar, Mumbai. Originally founded as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC), it was renamed IIPS in 1970. In 1985, the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared it a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The institute is recognized by the UGC and accredited with an ‘A’ grade by NAAC (2022).
IIPS serves as a regional center for training and research in population studies for the ESCAP region (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific). It offers Master’s, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs in areas such as Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Fertility & Social Demography, Public Health & Mortality Studies, Migration & Urban Studies, Population & Development, and Family & Generations. The institute also runs distance and online education programs, expanding its reach globally.
The Mumbai campus is equipped with modern classrooms, specialized research centers, a central library, hostels, and seminar halls, fostering advanced learning and policy-oriented research. IIPS collaborates with government bodies, UN agencies, and international organizations, making it a hub for population research, public health, and policy development in India and beyond.
