About Karnataka Folklore University

Karnataka Folklore University, also known as Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya, was established in 2011 by the Government of Karnataka under the Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya Act. Located at Gotagodi in Shiggaon Taluk, Haveri District, the public university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is regarded as the world’s first university dedicated exclusively to folklore studies. It offers postgraduate, M.Phil., Ph.D., and diploma programs in folklore, cultural studies, music, arts, and even management (MBA), with a strong emphasis on research and preservation of Karnataka’s rich folk traditions. The campus provides essential facilities including classrooms, laboratories, a central library, hostels, and sports amenities, set in a scenic environment between the Sahyadri ranges and the Northern Maidan plains.
