Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), located in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, was established in 1990 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is named after the Tamil poet and scholar Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai (1855–1897), who authored the famous Tamil drama Manonmaniam and contributed significantly to Tamil literature.
MSU is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by NAAC, offering programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral levels. The university has 66 affiliated colleges spread across the districts of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari, making it a key hub for higher education in the southernmost part of Tamil Nadu.
Its academic structure includes various departments and centers covering disciplines such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, and Education, with a strong emphasis on research and extension activities. The university also runs a Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education, extending opportunities to learners beyond its physical campus.
The Tirunelveli campus provides a serene environment for learning, equipped with libraries, laboratories, hostels, and sports facilities. MSU is particularly known for promoting regional development, Tamil culture, and community engagement, alongside its academic mission.
