About Periyar University
Periyar University, located at Periyar Palkalai Nagar in Salem, Tamil Nadu, is a state public university established in 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It was named after the social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar), reflecting its mission to promote education, equality, and social justice. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited with an A++ grade by NAAC, highlighting its academic excellence.
The university offers programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral levels across disciplines such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Education, and Management. It has four constituent colleges and a large network of over 100 affiliated colleges spread across the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri, making it a major hub for higher education in western Tamil Nadu.
The Salem campus is spread across 140 acres, equipped with modern laboratories, libraries, hostels, sports facilities, and research centers. Periyar University is particularly known for its School of Distance Education, which extends learning opportunities to thousands of students across India.
