Sambalpur University, located at Jyoti Vihar in Burla, Sambalpur District, Odisha, is a public research university established on 1 January 1967 by the Odisha Legislature. Popularly known as Jyoti Vihar, it was created to serve the educational needs of western Odisha and has since grown into one of the state’s leading universities. The Governor of Odisha serves as its Chancellor, and the institution is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited with Grade A by NAAC.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, and Social Sciences. It has a strong emphasis on research, with specialized centers focusing on socio-economic development, tribal studies, and rural upliftment. Sambalpur University also operates a Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), expanding access to learners across the state.
The Burla campus spans about 670 acres, located 15 km from Sambalpur town, and is equipped with classrooms, laboratories, libraries, hostels, and cultural facilities.
