About Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research
Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA), located at Tirumalaisamudram in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, is a private deemed-to-be university established in 1984. It was granted university status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, and has since grown into one of India’s leading institutions for higher education and research.
SASTRA offers programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across disciplines such as Engineering, Sciences, Law, Management, Humanities, and Education. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), accredited with an A++ grade by NAAC, and several of its engineering programs are internationally accredited by ABET. It consistently ranks among the top universities in India, securing #40 in Engineering in NIRF 2025 and placing in the 11–50 band overall.
The Thanjavur campus spans 300 acres, housing over 10,000 students and 800 faculty members, with state-of-the-art facilities including modern laboratories, libraries, hostels, sports complexes, and research centers.
