About Tamil Nadu Fisheries University
Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU), located at the Vettar River View Campus in Nagapattinam, is a state university established in 2012 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It was created to strengthen education, research, and extension activities in the field of fisheries science and aquaculture, supporting the state’s rich coastal and inland water resources.
TNFU offers programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels in disciplines such as Fisheries Science, Aquaculture, Fish Processing Technology, Fish Biotechnology, and Fisheries Engineering. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and works closely with national bodies like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The Nagapattinam campus is equipped with modern laboratories, hatcheries, fish farms, libraries, and training centers, providing students with hands-on exposure to fisheries and aquaculture practices. TNFU also operates constituent colleges and research stations across Tamil Nadu, including in Thoothukudi, Ponneri, and Muttukadu, ensuring regional outreach and specialized training.
Guided by its mission of “Blue Revolution through Fisheries Education”, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University plays a vital role in producing skilled professionals, promoting sustainable fisheries, and supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities across the state.
