Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, established on 1 June 1945, is a premier national research institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. Located at Dr. Homi Bhabha Road, Navy Nagar, Colaba, Mumbai, TIFR functions as a public deemed university recognized by the UGC. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, was established in 1945 by Dr. Homi J. Bhabha and is recognized as a Deemed University under the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is India’s premier research institution dedicated to advanced studies in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and science education. TIFR offers integrated MSc–PhD programs, standalone PhD programs, and postdoctoral opportunities. Admissions are highly competitive and conducted through the TIFR Graduate School Entrance Exam (GSAT), followed by interviews. Eligibility requires a strong academic background in science or mathematics at the undergraduate level, with top performance in national-level exams such as JEST, GATE, CSIR-UGC NET, or JAM also considered. Fees are minimal compared to other institutions, as TIFR is fully funded by the Government of India, and most admitted students receive stipends and fellowships.
