Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious institutions in the field of social sciences. It was renamed in 1944 and declared a Deemed-to-be University in 1964 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Located at VN Purav Marg, Deonar, Chembur, Mumbai, the main campus spans 21 acres and includes the Naoroji Campus. TISS is a multi-campus public university, with additional campuses in Tuljapur (Maharashtra), Hyderabad, and Guwahati. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as Social Work, Development Studies, Public Policy, Education, Health Systems, Labour Studies, Media & Cultural Studies, and Disaster Management. The institute has around 289 academic staff and over 4,000 students, including 1,200+ doctoral scholars.The university is globally recognized for its emphasis on social justice, human rights, and sustainable development, guided by its vision of creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable, and just society. TISS has strong collaborations with international institutions, including the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis and the BRICS Universities League.
