Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious institutions in the field of social sciences. It was renamed in 1944 and declared a Deemed-to-be University in 1964 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Located at VN Purav Marg, Deonar, Chembur, Mumbai, the main campus spans 21 acres and includes the Naoroji Campus. TISS is a multi-campus public university, with additional campuses in Tuljapur (Maharashtra), Hyderabad, and Guwahati. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as Social Work, Development Studies, Public Policy, Education, Health Systems, Labour Studies, Media & Cultural Studies, and Disaster Management. The institute has around 289 academic staff and over 4,000 students, including 1,200+ doctoral scholars.The university is globally recognized for its emphasis on social justice, human rights, and sustainable development, guided by its vision of creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable, and just society. TISS has strong collaborations with international institutions, including the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis and the BRICS Universities League.

Admissions Open 2026: Courses, Eligibility & Fees

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, was established in 1936 and is recognized as a Deemed University under the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is one of India’s most prestigious institutions for social sciences, public policy, and development studies. TISS offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral programs in disciplines such as Social Work, Sociology, Public Policy, Development Studies, Human Resource Management, Health Systems, Education, and Disaster Management. Admissions are conducted through the TISS National Entrance Test (TISS-NET), followed by TISS Online Assessment (OA) and interviews. Eligibility requires 10+2 for UG programs and a bachelor’s degree in any discipline for PG programs. Fees are affordable compared to private universities, with PG programs ranging between ₹60,000–₹1,20,000 per year, while doctoral programs cost around ₹80,000–₹1,50,000 annually.

Scholarships & Fee Concessions

TISS supports students through government scholarships for SC/ST/OBC, minority, and EWS categories, along with institutional merit-based concessions. Fee waivers are extended to economically weaker sections, while merit scholarships are awarded to top-performing students in TISS-NET and board exams. Special scholarships are also available for girls, differently-abled students, and achievers in social service or community development. On average, 35–40% of students benefit from scholarships annually, making education inclusive and accessible.
