The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (MBSPSU), located at Mohindra Kothi near Fountain Chowk in Patiala, Punjab, is a state residential and affiliating sports university established in August 2019 under The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University Act, 2019. It was named after Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, who was a great patron of sports in India. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and was created by the Punjab Government to promote sports education, training, and research in the state.
MBSPSU currently offers programs such as B.P.Ed. (Bachelor of Physical Education), M.P.Ed. (Master of Physical Education), and other specialized courses in sports sciences, coaching, and management. Admissions are merit-based, with physical fitness tests forming part of the selection process. The university also organizes inter-university sports championships and collaborates with national sports bodies to enhance training and exposure for students.
The Patiala campus is still under development, but the university has already enrolled nearly 300 students across different disciplines, supported by a faculty of around 16 members. The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Pushpinder Singh Gill, assumed office in February 2026, bringing over 36 years of academic and administrative experience. He has emphasized the university’s role in nurturing athletes and promoting sports as a means to combat social challenges like drug abuse in Punjab.
Guided by its motto “Nishe Kar Apni Jeet Karon” (Resolve to Win), MBSPSU continues to grow as Punjab’s premier sports university, aiming to produce world-class athletes, coaches, and sports professionals while integrating education with physical excellence.
