Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR), located at Ayuvihar in Burla, Sambalpur, is one of the oldest and most prominent medical institutions in western Odisha. Established in 1959 as VSS Medical College, it was later renamed in honor of Veer Surendra Sai, the legendary freedom fighter of Odisha. In 2017, it was upgraded to an institute of medical science and research to strengthen its academic, clinical, and research capabilities. The institution is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated with Sambalpur University. VIMSAR offers undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS), and super-specialty programs in various medical disciplines. It also provides nursing and paramedical courses, serving as a comprehensive center for healthcare education. Admissions are conducted through NEET-UG and NEET-PG examinations. The institute has a strong focus on clinical training, with its teaching hospital catering to thousands of patients from western Odisha and neighboring states, making it a vital healthcare hub in the region. The Burla campus is spread across a large area and is equipped with lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, hostels, and a 1,000-bed teaching hospital.
