Smt. Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women's University was established in 1916 by Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve, with generous philanthropic support from Sir Vitthaldas Thackersey, making it the first women's university in India and the first of its kind in South and South-East Asia. Reva University The university was named in 1920 in fond memory of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey, the mother of Sir Vitthaldas Thackersey, who pledged ?15 Lakhs — a princely sum at the time — towards its endowment. Remarkably, in 2000, SNDT became the first university in Maharashtra and the second in India to voluntarily apply for and successfully receive NAAC's highest 'A' Grade accreditation.
